Happy Halloween

Image
Our students were so excited to share the Spooky Stories that they have been working so hard on for the past few weeks. We celebrated by sharing our stories in costume with each other at the end of the day. We are so proud of our grade 3's determination and perseverance to complete this project.  In math we learned all about Canadian currency; 5s, 10s, 20s, 50s and 100s. We also talked about the Loonie and the Toonie. Ask your child if they remember some of the symbols of Canada on our money.  Starting tomorrow, two pre-service teachers from the University of Calgary will be joining us for their final practicum. Sienna Graf and Breanne Woytowich will be in class with us for November and December, and will return again from February to April 2023.

Halloween Particulars

Hello Grade 3 Families We ask that all costume weapons be left at home on this day and saved for the night of Halloween. Students are allowed to wear face paint all day if this is part of their Halloween costume, as we understand it can be difficult for families to get away during the lunch hour. Students who have a mask as part of their costume, will be asked to wear it on top of their head for school activities in the classroom and moving around the school for safety reasons. Classrooms may have some Halloween activities planned in the afternoon, and students may be invited to bring a personalized snack as part of this celebration. Please do not send whole class treats to hand out as we have many students with dietary restrictions, allergies and sanitization expectations makes this a challenging practice. There is no school  tomorrow. See you on Halloween.

Prodigy Math and Rocks & Minerals

Image
Today we classified rocks and minerals by colour, shape, size, hardness, lustre and texture. A big thank you to students who have brought in rocks from home and taught us about them! Soon we will be sending home some login information and welcome letters from Prodigy Math, a learning website that we use. If your child does not receive the login information, double check to be sure you have joined the Google Classroom. The invitation is in your student's Gmail. We finished reading The One and Only Ivan and are we ever sad it is over. It was a great book! Students are working on creating book reviews and recommendations about the book. Ask your child if they would recommend it to others.

Marshmallow Tower STEM Challenge

Image
Building skills in team work can be a big part of a STEM challenge. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. While participating in this challenge, students demonstrated creative thinking, construction knowledge, and innovative ideas during their team build. We learned about stamina, determination and perseverance. Thank you to our parent community for the donation of the supplies.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 25th is picture retake day. Anyone is able to take a retake. Please let your teacher know if you would like your child to participate in retakes.

We are very excited to get started.Feel free to do some extra writing at home if you want to. Here are a few great ideas to get writing about. Writing is fun! Both classes have their new library books. Make sure to spend some time reading together as a family.  Let's all experience joyful literacy.

Skip Counting with Dice

Image
Try this dice game at home, all you need are two dice, pencils and paper. For a challenge, try rolling three dice to create a 3-digit number. The more practice students have with manipulating numbers, the more automatic their number sense becomes. Have fun!

Family Traditions

Image
In Social Studies we shared about our family traditions- the things our families do that are important to us and make us unique. It was so neat to hear about dance parties, Frosty Fridays, breakfast for dinner, New Years' fondue, and so many more.  For our Spooky Stories, today we focused on writing the perfect opening sentence. Ask your child what kind of opening they used: dialogue, sound, traditional, setting, or suspenseful. These stories will rattle your bones.

Counting by 25s

Image
We are learning how to skip count. Today we skip counted by 25s to 1000. Ask your child to count quarters for you at home. How many quarters can they count? Skip counting is repeated addition. Repeated addition is one way that we learn about multiplication.  We started working on our Jason Carter art today. We learning about stamina and perseverance.  Some of us felt frustrated but we persevered. Our art will be beautiful. Ask your child about their drawing.  We finished our 8 box planning page for our spooky story. Your child has developed the introduction, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. Have them tell you their story.

Boulder Dash

Mr. Dunlop kept us on our toes during gym this morning. The best part was when we didn't get caught by the ball. Every student got a chance to race the ball. We are learning all the skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active and healthy lifestyle!  There will be no library this week as our librarian is busy adding SO MANY new books to our learning commons. We are excited to go next week and see what's new.  We received heartfelt thank you cards from  Mrs. Tonkin's  grade 5 classroom. They thanked us for our lovely Terry Fox assembly. This helped us feel connected to our classroom and school community.  Copperfield has heart!

Global Citizens

We hope you all had a relaxing weekend!   In Social Studies, we are examining our own lives, communities, culture, and celebrations so that we understand where we come from before studying those of other countries around the world. How does our quality of life compare to the quality of life of people in Tunisia? How do the celebrations in Peru compare to celebrations in Canada? Talk with your child about your family traditions and where your ancestors may have come from.

Terry Fox Run

Today the Grade 3s were the hosts of our Terry Fox assembly. Congratulations to the Grade 3s. We ran around the Wild Flower pond. It is exactly 1 km. Terry Fox ran 42 km a day. That's a lot of times around the pond. Ask me who I ran for?  Reminder: There is no school tomorrow, Friday October 7th or Monday October 10th. See you on Tuesday, October 11th. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Weekend.

Plot Mountain

Image
We have started learning about how to write a story using a plot mountain. We also studied prefixes! Ask your child what a prefix is. Tomorrow is the Grade 3 assembly. You are welcome to attend. The assembly will begin at 1:30 pm. Our Terry Fox run will be directly after the assembly.

Frisbees and the shivers!

Happy Monday, In Phys Ed this morning, students were out in the fresh fall air throwing frisbees with a partner. Throwing a frisbee requires skill and precision. See if you can catch a toss from your child! We began a new writing project today and although it is a secret, we can tell you that you might not want to read it late at night as it will give you the shivers. Ask your child about one of the characters they are planning to create.
