Today we explored the Indigenous Peoples' Atlas of Canada. We did a See, Think, Wonder routine and made a page in our visual journals. Ask your child what was different about this map than other maps that they have seen.  Mr. Dunlop had the snowshoes out for gym class. We got to see what it is like to snowshoe around the back school field.

Chrome Music Lab After a short midpoint check-in quiz on our Google Classroom (feel free to log onto your child's account to see the result of their quiz) we got to play with the Chrome Music Lab. Students experimented with pitch and amplitude. There was lots of excitement.

Today we finished our models of the human ear! They look fantastic. Ask your child to explain how the ear works using the model they bring home today. We had a spelling quiz that covered many of the words we have been familiarizing ourselves with over the last few weeks, either through curricular activities, word work, or the word of the day. Some students spelled all ten words correctly, but many need more practice. If you're a fan of spelling homework, give these words a shot: should, volume, friend, quiet, said, because, write, could, sound, went. Enjoy the sunshine!

In literacy this morning we discussed contraction words and practiced making them- see the catchy video above! We have also been dissecting a word each day, counting the vowels and consonants, syllables, making rhymes, definitions and sentences. This week, our words of the day have all been Hearing and Sound-themed words such as vibration, volume, and frequency. This afternoon we started a project to build a model of the human ear from plasticine. Ask your child to name the parts of the outer, middle and inner ear.

Our students are beginning to apply strategies for addition and subtraction with 1000. Along with the traditional algorithm of stacking, we are teaching how to model regrouping by place value for addition and subtraction. Above is a great video to watch with your child to really solidify the idea of regrouping for subtraction.

We are nearly halfway through our novel study book- "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler". The book was published in 1967, and we are having great conversations about the old-fashioned vocabulary, and the places the children go, like an Automat. Ask your child which part has been their favourite so far! Forms were emailed out yesterday for our February 8th field trip to Studio Bell. Be sure to sign and return the forms as soon as you can and let us know if you need any help. We would love to have you volunteer to come along with us!

We are working on increasing our flexible thinking in math class. Feel free to try a few of these questions at home with your child. Each question can have many more than one right answer. We are going on a field trip to Studio Bell on Wednesday, February 8th. We need volunteers to make this day possible and would love to have you join us. Please email Mrs. Depner and/or Mrs. Thouin if you can join us for this day. Volunteers must have completed their CBE volunteer paperwork and Calgary Police check through the school. Today was the first day of Lego Club at lunch for those grade 3 students that joined. Ask your child what they built!

KaBoom! We are working on building our fluency in basic math facts. This is a great game you can play at home with your child to work on automaticity. All you need are some popsicle sticks and a mug.  Please don't forget to log onto  POWERSCHOOL  to pay for your child's recorder. Your child will be starting a recorder unit in music class.  We have starting a January writing BINGO. Feel free to have your child write some more at home. Daily writing is extremely important and keeps our literacy skills growing.

The Threehouse had a great first day back. It was wonderful to see all our friendly and smiling faces. We started off the new year with a focus on making SMART goals. SMART stands for Specific,  Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. Ask your child what goals they created today for themselves.  Lego Club starts on Thursday, January 12th for those students who signed up. It will be during lunch from  12:00 until 12:25.  Please make sure to log into Powerschool and order/pay for your child's recorder. Ms. Sayer will be starting this unit soon.
