The Threehouse painted with common Indian spices today. Some of the spices we used included cloves, pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, chilli and curry powder. Spices make great paint and have the added bonus of smelling great! Our classroom smelled like butter chicken and holiday baking. The students mixed spices and blended spices to paint their Indian monument. Ask your child what spice was their favourite.

We had a great time during Buddies today. Mrs. Thouin's class taught their Grade 2 buddies how to log on to the school laptops. They were patient and kind teachers. Mrs. Depner's class built and tested anemometers with their Grade 5 buddies. It was made of wood and aluminum and it tests how fast the wind is blowing.  We have all been practicing our Winter Concert song called "It's Time for Summer." Ask your child to sing it for you!

In writing, we are working on including a varied range of sentence beginnings, sequencing writing in a logical order and checking our writing for fluency. Our current writing project is called The Best Excuse. It follows a repeating paragraph sequence. Students planned details sequentially  ensuring that their writing was organized and made sense. Emphasis was placed on the use of transition words throughout their paragraphs. Please make sure to book your parent teacher conference! We look forward to meeting with you soon.

In math, we have started a unit in graphing. We are learning about bar graphs and dot graphs. Graphs have an x-axis and a y-axis. Graphs have a title. Graphs have labels. Graphs tell us information. We are gathering and interpreting first- and second-hand data in graphs. We counted and tallied our favourite sports, favourite colours and favourite seasons etc. We made bar graphs to interpret our data. Ask your child to interview family members to collect data. Your child should be able to graph the information they collect in a bar graph. Here are some suggestions: favourite meals, favourite family outings, favourite family holidays.  Have a fabulous weekend and stay well.

Hi families, The wind was bitter today but we were grateful to get some time outside! We observed many types of snow and ice on our walk, noticing the effects of melting and re-freezing on the snowdrifts and sidewalks.  Ask your child what activity they did with their Buddies this afternoon- both groups had a fantastic time.

We enjoyed listening to their talented singing and watching their riveting   performance . Ask your child what was their favourite part of the presentation.  In Social Studies, we are continuing to study the country of India. We started by learning about its five geographical regions., then the climate. Today we zoomed in on four important monuments. Your child will begin a short research project about one of the four monuments that we are studying. Ask your child which monument they picked and what have they learned about it so far.

Today we observed and participated in the Remembrance Day assembly. Thank you to all the friends and family that were able to join us. The Threehouse has created a collective piece of Remembrance Day art as seen above. We made a stamp and each student took a turn creating their very own poppy. Together we remember.  Please remember that there is no school tomorrow. Have a fantastic weekend.

We are learning how to round in math. Rounding makes a number more simple when knowing the exact number isn't important. We use rounding in day to day life. Ask your child for an example of when you would use rounding? (Think of examples like; distance, time, money) We are starting by rounding to the nearest ten and will also be learning to round to the nearest hundred and thousand. Rounding makes numbers easier to use. What words do we use when we are rounding? Ask your child to round a few numbers to the tens place for you and ask them what the rounding rule is.  Tomorrow is our important Remembrance Day assembly. The assembly will start at 10:30 am. If your child goes to Girl Guides, Brownies or Beavers, they can come dressed in their outfit for the day. Otherwise, please dress in red or black if possible. Our classroom collective poppy art will be on display at the assembly.

It was a wonderful winter day for our grade 3s. Please ensure that your child is dressed and ready for winter weather. Students play outside at least twice a day and we do a lot of outdoor learning. Being ready for the weather is important and helps our students get the most out of their day.  Wednesdays is Buddy Day. Ask your child what they did with their buddy class. Building community and getting to know other teachers and students around the building improves our sense of wellness at school. We all logged onto Prodigy.com and played for the first time.  Students had a blast. Instructions and logins have gone home. Feel free to use this great math resources to supplement learning.
