February 28

After a full week of having to stay inside at lunch and recess, it feels great to finally get outside to play. Please ensure that your child comes dressed for the weather including snow pants.  In Science, we are studying different types of building materials. Today we took an in-depth look at wood, rubber, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, wool, sponges, metal, styrofoam, tinfoil and cloth. Ask your child what they learned. In Math, we are studying geometry. Today we used our bodies to make parallel and perpendicular lines in groups on the floor. Then we went for a parallel and perpendicular line hunt in the school hallways. See if you can find any parallel or perpendicular lines in your home with your child.

We are learning about regular and irregular polygons in our new geometry unit in math. Ask your child to tell you the difference between regular and irregular polygons. Look around the house to see if you can find these shapes. How may sides does an octagon have, what about a pentagon? We started a very beautiful art project using polygons.  In your child's backpack, you will find  student work about stable and unstable structures. Ask your child what they learned during our science lesson. Our new science unit is about building stable structures and using different materials.

Pink Shirt Day is February 22, 2023 Schools from across Canada will wear pink to support bullying prevention awareness, education and programs. This year’s theme, #BeKindAB, encourages Albertans to be inclusive, welcoming and supportive with colleagues, clients, friends and family. Building healthy relationships is one of the best ways to prevent bullying and create safe environments. We encourage all students to wear pink on this day to show their support. For more information, please visit the  Pink Shirt Day website. Pink Shirt Day Assembly Kindergarten will be hosting an assembly on Wednesday February 22 for Pink Shirt Day and to highlight our learning around kindness. Parents are welcome to come. Here are the following times for our assembly: AM CLASSES - 10:45am PM CLASSES - 2:30pm

Today we learned about effective communication. Effective communication is sharing your ideas, opinions and thoughts in a clear and respectful way.  In group work, that means to speak up and share your ideas but also to listen and be respectful of other student’s ideas.  Non-verbal communication, what you don’t say, is as important as what you say. We played this game at school with a partner. Try it at home with your child. There is a page of math work coming home today. If it has not been completed, please make sure to have your child finish the work and send it back.

Students are excited to celebrate kindness for Valentine's Day tomorrow. Your child is welcome to bring Valentine cards to exchange (but this is not required). We have 43 students in class, and it is best if students just write "To: my friend" and "From: (own name)" as organizing individual cards per student would be very time consuming! Please email your teacher with any questions. Our student teachers Ms. Graf and Ms. Woytowich also return tomorrow and will be with us until mid-April.

Today we designed and constructed sound producing devices that can change pitch and volume. Ask your child to describe what they created. The class was very engaged in this work and created beautiful instruments. These will come home soon but we need to keep them in the classroom for presentations and a musical event. Have a great weekend!

Can you build a heart tower from 20 or 21 tiny cups and some cardstock? Students used positive self-talk and a growth mindset for their well-being STEM challenge today. Ask your child how it went. What went well? What was tricky? What would they do differently next time?

We had a fantastic day at Studio Bell. A big thank you to all the parent volunteers that were able to support us and make this day possible. Ask your child what they enjoyed the most from the day. We learned a lot about hearing and sound. We played with different types of instruments and listened to all sorts of different styles of music. We are already excited for our next field trip to Telus Spark on Wednesday, April 26th.

Hi families, We are thrilled to be heading to Studio Bell on our field trip tomorrow, Wednesday February 8th.  Each child will need a nutritious lunch, water bottle, and snacks in their backpacks. Buying food/drink on-site is not permitted. Please dress appropriately.  On Friday, we will be building our own musical instruments out of recyclable materials. It would be great if students would bring in small containers, cardboard tubes, elastics, anything they think may be useful!
