 Hi families,

We hope you had a fantastic long weekend! Today students applied all they have learned about testing materials and building structures when they built the structure of their choice using recyclable materials. Bookcases, bridges and sandboxes abounded as our engineers designed the best possible structures with the available materials.

As you know, our field trip to Telus Spark is coming up. If you have not yet signed and returned your consent form, a paper copy will be coming home in your student's backpack. Please sign and return by Friday of this week. Thanks!

Dear Threehouse: Over the next three weeks, your child will be learning about fractions. Your child will focus on using fractions to name equal parts of a whole, modelling fractions, comparing, and writing about fractions. They will use fraction words such as halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, and sixths. They will use numbers such as , and, and learn that the top number is called the numerator, and the bottom number is called the denominator. To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these: • Have your child look for pictures of objects in magazines that are divided into equal parts and then name each part using fractions. • Have your child identify objects in your home that can be named using fractions of a whole, such as an ice cube tray, a divided dish, a tackle box, or any other object divided into equal parts. Dear Threehouse! O ver the next two weeks, your child will be learning how to create and solve division problems that involve either equal sharing or equal grouping. Your child will use various strategies, such as multiplication, repeated subtraction, and a number line, to solve division problems. To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these: • Use any type of food such as baked goodies or pizza to have your child figure out how to equally share pieces among a certain number of people. • Have your child determine how many pieces to create from a pan of brownies or cake to feed the family the same serving size, such as 2 or 3 pieces. • With your child, practise using common objects or situations at home to show both equal sharing and equal grouping.
