 Hi families, Tomorrow is Activity Day!  We have a number of stations planned and I know students are very excited about this day. Please ensure your student comes to school prepared to be outdoors for a few hours. It is recommended students bring a hat, water bottle, and apply sunscreen prior to coming to school.

  Please take a look around your house and make sure that you have returned all the Copperfield library books. Our librarian is busy collecting books and needs everything returned. Thanks for your cooperation.  Activity day is approaching. Thank you to all our volunteers that are making this day possible. Thank you to Parent Council for the freezies celebration at the end of the day.  A lot of school work came home today. Take a moment to review your child's important work. Have a great summer solstice. 

 As grade 3 comes to an end, we are celebrated today by playing some Minecraft for Education. Students solved different educational Minecraft challenges and played together to create and build. In math, we are learning about equivalent fractions. In literacy, we are finishing our Fractured Fairytales which will come home shortly. These are great stories and need to be celebrated.

Today we worked on a math and art project. We created Fraction Fish. Ask your child to describe what they worked on. We are also getting ready to celebrate the Summer Solstice. Today we watched Elder Saa'kokoto talk about welcoming summer. This week we will host jingle dances and learn about Indigenous flags. 

Dear Threehouse: Over the next three weeks, your child will be learning about fractions. Your child will focus on using fractions to name equal parts of a whole, modelling fractions, comparing, and writing about fractions. They will use fraction words such as halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, and sixths. They will use numbers such as , and, and learn that the top number is called the numerator, and the bottom number is called the denominator. To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these: • Have your child look for pictures of objects in magazines that are divided into equal parts and then name each part using fractions. • Have your child identify objects in your home that can be named using fractions of a whole, such as an ice cube tray, a divided dish, a tackle box, or any other object divided into equal parts. Hi families, The following was sent out regarding our upcoming Activity Day. If you are available, we'd love for you to join us! June 2, 2023 Dear Parents/Guardians: Gr 1 – 5 Copperfield students will take part in our Activity Day on Friday, June 23, 2023. The day will consist of an assembly, warm up and track and field inspired events. Activity Day isn’t possible without the valuable assistance of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to run the stations that have been organized by school staff. All volunteers are required to have current Security Clearance already in place with the CBE. For safety and liability reasons, CBE policy asks that you please find alternative care for siblings who do not attend Copperfield School during the Sports Day. Volunteers will be notified ahead of time as to the station they have been assigned to. School staff will be responsible for organizing all the equipment required for the stations. There will ...

 We had a great day today with lots of outside time and fresh air. Our students continue to learn about division using arrays and equal groups. We watched our mealworms changing into beetles and a few more beetles went home. Today we played some Minecraft for Education which all the students enjoyed. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sun.

 The grade 2s of Copperfield School put on a fantastic assembly for us about the Seven Sacred Teachings; Love, Respect, Honesty, Courage, Humility, Wisdom and Truth.  In math we are studying division. Keep on practicing your basic facts at home.  Beetles are coming home soon! Our mealworms are completing their lifecycle. Students have been thrilled to watch the mealworms grow and change.  Hi families, Students are bringing home some math work in their backpacks- either completed and marked, or with a note to please complete it at home and return it to school. Two more beetles have emerged from their pupas and will be coming home today.  We explored fractured fairy tales based on two traditional fairy tales today- ask your child about these!

 Breaking news! Our mealworms have been proceeding through their life cycle, from larva to pupa to adult. The adult form of a mealworm is a Darkling Beetle. Once students' mealworms have undergone metamorphosis and are in the full beetle form, students are invited to bring their beetles home. The beetles eat food scraps of any kind and can be released safely outside.   

Today we practiced a drill known as a Lockdown . We had a conversation with our students on why we may need to go into lockdown and provided instructions on how to do so safely.  Our School Resource Officer was in attendance to support the practice lockdown and to provide staff and students with feedback. In math, we are working on division. How can we show an understanding of division using equal groups? Ask your child what they  already know about equal groups and how does that help thier thinking about division? Some of our mealworms have turned into beetles! It has been a lot of fun and very educational to watch the mealworm life cycle in action. Ask your child what is happening to their mealworm.

 Fairytales  We have begun our Fairy tale Literacy unit. Today we learned about what makes a fairy tale and we listened to a few different fairy tale stories. Do you have any fairy tales at home that you could read with your child? We will be studying, writing, reading and exploring many different fairy tales over the course of the next three weeks. We might even begin writing our own fairy tales this week! Ask your child to retell the fairytale of the Three Little Pigs. 

Dear Threehouse! O ver the next two weeks, your child will be learning how to create and solve division problems that involve either equal sharing or equal grouping. Your child will use various strategies, such as multiplication, repeated subtraction, and a number line, to solve division problems. To reinforce the concepts your child is learning at school, you and your child can work on some at-home activities such as these: • Use any type of food such as baked goodies or pizza to have your child figure out how to equally share pieces among a certain number of people. • Have your child determine how many pieces to create from a pan of brownies or cake to feed the family the same serving size, such as 2 or 3 pieces. • With your child, practise using common objects or situations at home to show both equal sharing and equal grouping. For example, “How can we share 12 comic books among 4 people” (equal sharing) or “If each person receives 3 comic books and there are 12 books, how many peop...

 Happy Star Wars day!  Today we finished our read-aloud novel "Heartwood Hotel 2: The Greatest Gift". Ask your child what they wrote when answering the questions "What was your favourite/least favourite part?" "Would you recommend this book?" "Who was your favourite character?" This book had a winter theme and there are two more books in the series- the next one we will read is set in the spring. The series is filled with interesting animal facts and messages about friendship and belonging.  Tomorrow is a PD Day, so we are wishing you all a happy weekend.

  Multiplication Arrays Multiplication arrays are all around us. Feel free to watch this video with your child and look for arrays in your home. It could be a simple as bricks on a wall, windows in a row or trees planted in a field. Our work in multiplication continues every day. Please practice the multiplication table at home on a regular basis.  Our mealworms are beginning to pupate. We are actively watching their daily changes. Ask your child what they noticed during our observation time today. What do they wonder will happen next and what surprised them them most so far? 

 Today we went on a beautiful pond around Wild Pond. During our walk, we counted 32 Red Wing Black Birds, 24 ducks and 4 geese. Spring is really in the air. The weather is looking better and better. Please send your child with sunscreen/hats and sunglasses. We will be spending lots of time learning outside. Wednesday, May 3 is Hats On For Mental Health Day. Feel free to send your child with a hat to wear all day long.  Our mealworms are growing. Yesterday we measured them with a ruler in cm and we are excited to see how big they will grow.

 Today we got up close and personal with our mealworms, observing their behaviour, handling them, and giving them names. We learned mealworm anatomy and their very interesting life cycle- ask your child what their mealworms will eventually turn into! Next week looks to be sunny and beautiful. It's a good idea to send hats and sunscreen, and make sure students have a water bottle. Many students seem to be hitting a growth spurt and may need some extra snacks and lunch for their hungry bellies. Have a great weekend!

 We had a fantastic field trip to Telus Spark yesterday where we learned about the history of Rube Goldberg machines and created Action Reaction Contraptions of our own! Some students also participated in science experiments about the pH scale and got to wear real lab coats, while others enjoyed playing in the outdoor Brainasium or took in a show in the Dome theater. Huge thanks to all the volunteers who came along with us and made the field trip possible.  Today we each became the proud parent of a mealworm or 3. We will research our squirmy pets, take care of them, and observe them throughout their life cycle. Ask your child what they plan to name their mealworm(s)!

Tomorrow we are going on a field trip to Telus Spark. The bus will be leaving at 8:30 am sharp. Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather. We will be inside and outside during the field trip. Your child should have a healthy lunch and a water bottle. Students will be building an Action Reaction Contraption. 

 In math, we are continuing to learn about multiplication arrays.   A multiplication array is simply  an arrangement of rows or columns that matches a multiplication equation . You can make arrays out of objects or pictures, and you can use any sort of shape. Check your child's backpack for a multiplication array worksheet. Your child should be able to explain to you how they made multiplication equations from each different array. Please discuss and have your child complete the worksheet if it isn't finished.  Over the next 3 school days, Mrs. Thouin and Mrs. Depner will be attending an educational conference called Learning and the Brain. In our absence, we have two very wonderful substitute teachers who will be leading the class. Ms. Samphire and Ms. McCosh are happy to continue teaching and providing a warm, caring environment for our Threehouse students.  Today was our special Teacher of the Day experience.
