In grade 3, students learn about hearing and sound in Science. Students discover the nature of sound, and demonstrate methods for producing and controlling sound. Today we learned about the human ear. Ask your child if they can name a part of the ear. We will be going to Studio Bell on Wednesday, February 8th for a field trip. This will be to continue our studies about sound. We are looking for volunteers to accompany us. If you would like to volunteer, please let us know.

Copperfield school continues to collect donations for the Mitten Drive.   The “ Mitten Drive ” in support of  Fear IsNot Love  is an excellent opportunity for members of our community to give back to others in Calgary. Copperfield School will be collecting mitten donations between December 9 – 20, 2022. As well, our students will collaborate with their buddy classes to create a special message to share with seniors living in neighbouring facilities. We hope these simple acts of kindness will help all of us to understand the differences we can make in our world.

Our class has begun a new science unit. We will be learning about hearing and sound. We discovered that we already know a lot about sound. We know that sound travels through the air. We know that we hear with our ears. We know that we have an ear drum and that we have to keep it safe. There are also a lot of questions that we have about hearing and sound. What is inside our ears? Can an ear drum burst? What is ear wax and why do we have it? What is the speed of sound? Can sound travel through water? What makes a sound pleasant or unpleasant? There are so many things to learn about sound. Ask your child what they learned today.  All the Winter Concert tickets have gone home. We look forward to the Cast A Winter Concert - Mrs. Thouin's class - tomorrow on Wednesday, December 14th.  Mrs. Thouin's students will arrive at 6:00pm and go to their classrooms where they will be greeted by their teacher.  The concert begins at 6:30 pm. After the concert is over, you will col...

Today we finished our Rocks and Minerals unit with a SMASH by opening Geodes! Ask your child about the experience and what they discovered. We also worked on a top secret winter art project. Today we also said goodbye to our Student Teachers Ms. Graf and Ms. Woytowich. They will complete more University courses and seminars before returning to our classroom in February 2023.  Heads up that students will be bringing home their two tickets for the Winter Concert today.  We wish you all a warm and sunny weekend!

As we near the end of our social studies unit about India, we are studying different cultural traditions. Today we looked closely at Mehndi art and learned about its significance. Ask your child about the differences between and grade 3 class in India compared to our grade 3 class in Canada.

Celebrate with us because we completed our science unit of rocks and minerals. Today we wrote our unit exam. Ask your child How are sedimentary rocks formed? Describe the rock cycle? What is weathering? What are the three types of rock? How are rocks used in our world? We spent time with our buddies. In Mrs. Thouin Buddy class we studied short vowel sound. In Mrs. Depner's buddy class we did a bar graph.  We had fun lunch. Thank you to our parent volunteers for your help.

What is time? What can you do in a minute? What about a second? How long does an hour feel. Time is a unit of measurement. The hour hand is the short hand and the first hand you read. The minute hand is the long hand and is the second hand that you read. In class we used manipulable analog clocks to experiment with setting and telling time. Ask you child what time it is right now!

Today we used Starburst candy to recreate the rock cycle. Students took their "sediments" and pressed them together to make a conglomerate sedimentary rock. From there, they applied heat and pressure to create metamorphic rock, and as the rock heated up even more, it became igneous. Ask your child what the three types of rock are called!
