We use place value to compare numbers.  Have a wonderful weekend.

Number Words

Image
We are learning how to write numbers in word form. Today we went on a number search around the school building. We collected as many numbers as we could find and returned to the classroom to write those numbers in word form. Check your child's backpack for a number word crossword and word search. This can be completed at home. Look for all the places that numbers are written as words around the house together with your child. In what situations do we need to write numbers in word form? Discuss at home!   An expanded notation assessment came home. Please review with your child.  As part of Truth and Reconciliation Week, we are spotlighting Indigenous authors and artists. Ask your child about artist Jason Carter's style of painting, and if you are ever on main street in Canmore, be sure to pop by the Carter Ryan Art Gallery to see his work in person!

National Truth and Reconciliation Week

Image
This is National Truth and Reconciliation Week. Today we had an assembly where we learned about why it is important to acknowledge the land. We spend some time in nature in our sit spots. We answered the questions "How am I connected to the land?" and "How do I give to the land?".  Ask your child what their answers were. We will continue to learn about residential schools and the importance of Orange Shirt Day throughout the week.

Expanded Notation and Fall Equinox

Image
We have been working on expanded notation to 1000 in math. We learned about the long lifespan of the bowhead whale, the koi fish, the Galapagos tortoise, the quahog clam and the tuatara, and noted these using expanded notation.  Today is the Fall Equinox, and we learned from Blackfoot Elder Red Plume (Shane Cunningham) about the meaning of this important time. Ask your child to share some of his teachings with you. We look forward to seeing you all at Parent Conferences tonight and tomorrow!

Picture Day!

Image
Tomorrow is picture day and library day! In class, we are reading the book called The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. This story has many interesting characters like Ruby, Stella, Mack and Bob. Ivan is the main protagonist. We are working on using better description words in our writing and we are learning how authors describe their characters.  Ivan is a silverback gorilla. J.D. Ivan is exceptionally strong. A.S. Ivan has fur the colour of the night sky.  His fur is matte black. B.C. Ask your child to describe some other characters from the book. Please book your conferences!

Moment of Silence

Today we observed a moment of silence and reflected on the life of Queen Elizabeth II. Students were amazed to know that she was the Queen for 70 years. In other news, we finished our first big writing and art project and are looking forward to sharing this with you. In Science, we studied the different properties of rocks and minerals. Ask your child what lustre means. Can your child remember any other rock properties?

Rocks and Minerals

Image
"We learned that rocks are made out of minerals and minerals are pure."- M.T. "There is a whole bunch of different stuff in a rock." -A.R. Have a discussion about where rocks and their products show up in our lives!

Nuts in the classroom

Today we began our first draft of our "Connecting to the Land" writing project, by crafting an introduction. Ask your child what special outdoor place they chose to write about! We are a nut aware school however since we have 2 severely allergic students in the ThreeHouse, we are asking that parents please not send any nuts or nut products to school.  Please make sure to complete your demographic forms. These are available in your Powerschool Portal under Student Engage.

IMAT Skills

We are working on setting routines and expectations with the whole class, and it would beneficial  to discuss this at home too. Ask your child what it means to use your IMAT skills. IMAT skills are skills we use to solve problems between students. If someone is bothering you, try using your IMAT skills. I- Ignore. Ignore what the person is doing for 60 seconds. If they do not stop... M- Move away. Find a new spot to sit or play. If they follow you and the problem continues... A- Ask them to stop. They may be bothering you on purpose, or they may have thought it was a game and didn't know you didn't like it- now they know. If the problem continues... T- tell. Tell the teacher, supervisor, or other adult about the problem and they will help you solve it. Have a wonderful evening!

Place Value

Image
We are learning about place value. Ask your child how many ones make a ten, how many tens make a hundred and how many hundreds make a thousand. We use this jingle to help us remember.

Rocks and Minerals

This afternoon we are beginning to explore the wonderful world of rocks and minerals. Here are some things we know: Rocks have different weights, there are different kinds of rocks, rocks can change, rocks come from mountains, rocks come from volcanoes, rocks have different textures Here are some things we are wondering about: What is inside rocks? Why do some rocks sparkle? Why are rocks different colours? Can rocks be mixed together? Why are there more rocks in rivers than on land? Why are rocks different shapes? We read this story about finding a rock: https://youtu.be/9JehbJHYums If someone in your family happens to be a geologist, rock enthusiast, crystal collector or general fan of minerals, we would love to hear from you!

Fun Times in Gym

Image
This week in Phys Ed students have been learning plenty of cooperative games, including ring toss, giant jenga, cat and mouse, hopscotch, cup stacking, skipping, snakes and ladders, and ladder ball. Ask your child which game was their favourite. In Math we were working on place value, building and decomposing numbers. We also visited the library- our library days are Wednesday (Depner)  and Thursday (Thouin) weekly, Students may borrow up to two books per week, to be returned on their library day.

Zones of Regulation / I Promise

Image
Today we learned about the Zones of Regulation. These colours help our students recognize, understand and learn to manage their emotions. This is a framework that uses four colours—blue, green, yellow, and red—to help students identify their feelings and levels of alertness. Teaching students how to read their bodies’ signals, detect triggers, read social context, and consider how their behaviours impact those around them leads to improved emotional control, sensory regulation, self-awareness, problem-solving skills and overall better learning in the classroom.  We talked about our classroom community and ways to make sure it is a safe and positive place to learn and grow. Students will do their best to uphold the 3 Pillars of Community- to care for myself, to care for others, and to care for this place.  We read the book "I Promise" by LeBron James and students made personal promises and goals for the 2022/2023 school year- be sure to ask your child about their promises! ...

Paper Chain STEM Challenge

Image
We continue to build teamwork strategies through different classroom challenges. Today, in groups, we had to build the longest paper chain using only one piece of paper. As us what worked and what didn't.  Reminder that Monday is a holiday so we will see you on Tuesday, September 6. Have a great long weekend!

First Day Back

Image
ThreeHouse Team Work What a great first day of school! We learned routines, had a great lunch, enjoyed recess at park and played a teamwork game.  Ask me about how I saved Sam! How was I a great team member? What did I do to help others? Our students are happy to be back and we are very excited to welcome some new students. We made lots of new friends today.   Reminders: Your student needs to have a pair of indoor shoes that stay in the building. Tomorrow is a half day. We will dismiss at 11:45am.
